Family Stories

Southern has earned several belt loops in Cub Scouts so far, and his most recent belt loop earned is called Family Stories. It was one of the more detailed adventures, but I enjoyed going over the requirements with him.

Requirement 1 was to discuss your family origins, history, traditions, and heritage with your adult partner. We talked about our family members, and I shared some of the family traditions that I have been a part of during my life time. We also walked around our house looking at different family items that had been passed down to us. My dad's mom and Dustin's mom's mom had both passed down stuff to us over the years, so we looked at a couple furniture pieces, some dishes and knick-knacks, and a few paintings made by Dustin's mom, and I shared the stories of each item as far as I knew it. After we had walked around the whole house, I asked Southern what his favorite thing was out of everything passed down to us, and he picked this blue and white pitcher pictured below from my granny. She had it on display on top of her refrigerator when I was growing up, and when she gave it to me, she said that it had no real story behind it other than she had liked it and bought it for herself many years ago. We display it on top of the bookcase in the living room since the painting I made of the Alamo has the same shade of blue in it.

Requirement 2 was to create a family crest. This is what Southern drew. It shows the Comal River in the upper left corner. Our cat Dracky is pictured in the upper right corner, and there is a tree and hiking trail in the middle since we like to go on hikes as a family. Southern drew our family in the bottom left corner and a "fancy" W in the bottom right corner. He then wrote our name in "fancy" writing at the top of the paper.

Requirement 3 was to find information about your heritage online. We looked at maps online of Mexico, Europe, and the United States. We also looked up the origins of the surname Wyatt and found that it developed from the Olde English pre-7th Century given name "Wigheard". The first known Wyatt in Europe was Sir Thomas Wyatt (1502-1542) who was in service to Henry VIII. The first known Wyatt in the United States was his great-grandson, Sir Frances Wyatt, who became the first Royal Governor of Virginia in 1624.

Requirement 4 was to interview one of your grandparents or another family elder and to write a story about him/her. Southern interviewed his Grammy, my mom, a couple of weeks ago, and this is the story that he wrote about her.
My grandmother's name is Grammy. Her side of the family was originally from Mexico, and she grew up in Wharton, TX. When she was little, she went to her cousins' house and was able to look at their race horses. She also used to go to Matagorda Beach with her family. When they stayed home, she would play fun games like riding bikes, jumping rope, and playing baseball. She liked living in Wharton because all of her family was close by.
THE END

Requirement 5 was to make a family tree. The spaces in the pre-made family tree in his Cub Scouts book only went as far up as grandparents, so this requirement was completed fairly quickly.

Requirement 6 was to share how you got your name or what your name means. Southern learned that Mommy picked his name because she thought it was pretty ;) He also learned that his name means of the south and warm-hearted. He already knew that he was named after his grandfather with his middle name Jeffrey, but he learned that Jeffrey means peaceful.

Requirement 7 was to share with your den a food item that reflects your cultural heritage. Southern is taking a beef enchilada casserole to the den meeting tonight.

Requirement 8 was to learn where your family comes from, locate it on a map, and to locate and write to a pen pal from that location. We contacted our friend and Remington's godfather George Garza who has relatives in Mexico. He is setting us up with one of his nephews so that Southern can write him a letter. The requirement is only that Southern writes one letter and asks for a response, but this may turn into a neat friendship with multiple letters back and forth.

Pinewood Derby 2016

This was our first year for the Pinewood Derby, and it was a success! Southern (and Dustin) had fun building his car. Southern wanted a Mario-themed car, so he chose to paint it red with a white circle on top with a red M like Mario's car in Mario Kart.

Southern's derby car was raced for the first time at the Pack 163 Pinewood Derby on January 10th at the KC Hall here in New Braunfels. My dad and Joyce came to watch, and Southern won 1st place in his age group, the Tigers. He was awarded a 1st place ribbon for his scout uniform and a certificate for Most Imaginative Car.

Southern's derby car was raced again on February 13th in the Two Rivers District Pinewood Derby at Bluebonnet Motors here in New Braunfels. My mom and Josh came to watch, and Southern won first place for his age group, the Tigers! He was also one of the finalists for the derby overall, including all age groups. He was awarded a first place medal and two patches for his uniform.

After Southern's first race, my dad gave Southern his old derby car from when he was in Cub Scouts. He had painted his red too!

Go Spurs Go

Southern is once again a part of the Spurs Junior League here in New Braunfels. He loves it, and so do I! It's so much fun going to the games. They started this season at the beginning of January with the first game in mid-January. They have practice every Tuesday afternoon and a game every Saturday morning with the last one being the first weekend in March. So our season is coming to a close.

Last year, he was on a co-ed kindergarten team. This year, his team is made of 1st and 2nd graders, boys only, and the backboard is raised a foot higher than last year. He's number 3, and there are ten boys on his team. They make sure each kid is able to play two quarters, but when there is a player or two absent on game day, some kids are able to play three quarters.

At the most recent game, Southern played the first three quarters. He made the first two points of the game by sinking two free throws. At half time, the score was 4-2 us. He then made another basket during the third quarter raising the score to 6-2 with 10:17 remaining in the last half. He was on fire! Parents of fellow teammates in the stands around me were turning to me and giving me compliments. And when Southern was on the bench during the last quarter, I saw a couple of the dads pat his back and congratulate him. The game ended at 12-2, and in the coach's talk after the game, he said they had played the best defensive game all year.

Southern's artwork

Southern's artwork is going to be featured in a music video! He submitted a drawing a few months back, and it sounds like the video will soon be released. I'm excited, and I know he will be when he hears the news.

Lucas Miller, the singing zoologist, is one of the boys' favorite artists. His "I Love Earth" CD has kept us occupied for many, many days in carline (I think I pretty much know the words to all 21 songs on that CD). It is probably the most requested CD we own. We have gone to see him live a few times, and we own one of his DVD's and a couple of his books. You can look him up on Youtube if you haven't heard of him.

I have a challenge for my young fans: I need a "shrink ray" for a sort-of-soon-to-be-released music video for my plankton song. Draw one, make one out of Legos or whatever you can come up with and then send me a picture of it (tkae it against the plainest background you can find). I'll use the winning entry in the video and I'll be sure to thank you in the credits!

Lucas Miller, the "Singing Zoologist" I'm FINALLY getting to putting this into the project. It's for my plankton song so I open with Southern's shrink ray reducing me to plankton size. How would you like me to credit him? Full name, just first name or not at all? There's a sign that says "Wyatt's Amazing Shrink Ray." I'd call it "Southern's" but I think it might confuse people since it has another meaning. Is that okay with y'all? It looks great!
Lindsey Wyatt Sounds great. He'll be so excited. Thanks!

Paws to Read

Our library participates in the Paws to Read program where special volunteers bring in their dog or cat to the library's meeting room to listen to children read books. Each child signs up to have a turn reading aloud to the animals. Southern read to Tazzy this past Monday.

Thankful

This Thanksgiving was bittersweet. It was nice to see loved ones, but we missed those who are no longer with us.

Dustin, the boys and I did our usual Yoakum whirlwind. We started the morning off with a stop at Granny Ehlers' house. We got to visit with all of the many families from the Brandl side of the family. The boys played with a couple young cousins, Weston and Greta. We ate a little bit there and then headed to our next stop. We went to Poppy and DeDe's house next. We visited with the Wyatt and Hitchcock relatives, and the boys played with 3rd cousin Victoria. We then made one quick detour to the nursing home to see Granny Hahn on our way to our last stop of the night, for the Perez family Thanksgiving. The boys had a blast with cousin Isaiah, and we had our second turkey meal of the day. We bathed the boys and headed home after 9pm. It was a very full day!

During the car ride, we all took turns saying what we were thankful for. I of course said Dustin and the boys. I am thankful for so much, but they are my life. What are you thankful for this season?

Here is what Southern wrote at school
